Building a Budget Bed Platform for Under $100

I have decided to go this route, something cheap and easy yet sturdy and serves its purpose. Unfortunately, at this time I can not afford a roof top tent and be like all the other cool kids in the forest, so this will do. I have just quit my job and have 3 days to pack, plan and build this, so lets roll.

The hardest part was honestly getting the wood and making it fit in my vehicle. After multiple failed attempts in the pouring rain, I just decided to cut it in the store parking lot while everyone looked at me like I was some maniac, but I was on a mission.

  • Menards Shopping List
    • 2 continuous hinges 1-1/2X3 = $21.96
    • 4 corner braces 7/8″ = $10.74
    • 12 ft turf/outdoor carpet = $29.99
    • 19/32″ plywood $34.78
    • small project assisted by my uncle = priceless
  • Grand Total = $97.47

I have decided to keep the cost of materials out such as sanding discs, nuts and bolts and staples because majority of that stuff was laying around the house. I decided to attach the hinges so I could easily fold it and use the rear seats if I needed. Whala, finished product.

I am 5’5″ and can lay comfortably with Turbo back here, any taller than this we would be a bit cramped. This along with my insulated Hinman self inflating sleeping pad and Coleman mummy bag I will be sleeping like a baby.

Why car camping over tent camping?

In my opinion, safer and easier for a solo traveler. I have solar power motion lights on my roof rack and when they go off at night, I just feel so much more at ease looking out my locked car than having to take a peak from unzipping my tent. This also keeps me out of the elements and is easy to set up, as there is no setting up. I will still bring a small pop up tent to use if I need it.

Time to go test it out!
