Anything is Possible with My Luck: Honda Down

Anything is possible with my luck, I am here in the middle of nowhere public land near Bryce Canyon with a down Honda. I thought it was impossible, Honda has been my dedicated daily vehicle since 2013. But… They were late 90s/early 2000s. Hence the saying “they just don’t make em like they used to“. I have 8,000 miles on it and here I am… Honda Care is absolutely useless, they won’t send a tow as the nearest dealer is 150 miles away, so I will let the car sit for a while, think about what it’s done and hopefully fix its behavior. All my other Hondas fixed themselves after a time out, don’t let me down.

Irrelevant note: Bridgestone RE71Rs do not do well in sand. Whose idea was it to take her racecar on a cross country trip? I specifically told myself I would NOT take any back roads… That was a lie. I resist back road temptations like ice cream, I can’t.

As some fellow campers in a big old Dodge pickup pass by, they stop and ask if I need help. I explain my story and they offer to make me some food and if I needed a ride, they would be glad to do so. I don’t want to leave my car behind, so I opt out for some dinner. They made a bomb taco salad! We exchanged stories and let time pass by, giving my fuel pump time to cool off.

Low and behold, a time out never fails, good job Honda. We are back on the road, in limp mode, making our way back to Saint George (Thank you Stephen Wade Honda! They took my call last minute and will look at the car in the morning. If I make it there that is. No thank you Honda Care extended warranty…) My assumption is fuel pump, I recall reading about it on all the track forums, it was going to go one way or another. I was just hoping it wouldn’t be legit in the middle of nowhere.

Both calls I made found it quite funny a girl in a dead Type R was calling with GPS coordinates since she was on a service road in back country Utah. At the time, I didn’t think it was funny, but I do now.

I limped the car all the way to Cedar City Utah

Where I stopped at a local auto parts store and scanned the code. Bam.

I made the call to Honda Care since I am close to Saint George, but they still won’t cover a tow.

I’ve decided to leave the car running and take it through the pressure washer before limping it all the way to the dealer. Wash off all that back road dust giving me a clean slate like I never took the car off road. Here goes nothing, luckily the RedRoof in has that great hotel with views open again.

June 11th, back on the Road

Honda has fixed the car and we are back on the road! I spent my extra two days walking around Saint George, enjoying the 100-degree sunshine and warmth. To make time go by, I checked out a few local thrift stores, dropped in at CrossFit Dixie and enjoyed a good conversation and meals from Black Bear Diner.

Back to Bryce Canyon!
